The first signs of life for Akimbo
began in the summer of 1997. It all started when a guitarist
named Jerry was trying to persuade a co-worker named Rex Storer,
who had previoulsy played the drums, but hadn't had a set
for several years, to get off his butt, get a kit, and start
doing some jamming. Rex finally broke down and bought a set
a few months later, and the jamming began. Two other guitarists,
John Lucas Patt and Todd, quickly got in on the act, and a
band, Atomic Brown, started to take shape. Still no bassist
or vocalist. Jerry becomes the first defection as the band
wasn't going in a suitable direction for him, and Todd only
knew Black Sabbath songs, but John and Rex kept the flame
burning by continuing to jam regularly. Then in fall 1998,
a connection is made with a bassist/vocalist through a mutual
friend. Attila Horvath is contacted and an audition is scheduled.
The trio hits it off immediately. Akimbo is born; begins writing
original music, and playing gigs.
In December 1999, Akimbo records a nine song
demo CD at the INSEA soundshop in Nelsonville Ohio with producer/engineer
Nick Collura working the board. Brian Adams is brought in
for digital remastering, and the album is released in April
2000. A few weeks earlier, Akimbo takes their first hit when
Rex unwillingly leaves the band due to his busy work and school
schedule. However, Attila finds replacement drummer Thom Hirbe,
and Akimbo doesn't miss a beat (pun intended). In November,
Akimbo is back in the studio, this time with Bob Astrom and
his Boy in Blue Company to record two more songs. Akimbo takes
their second hit when Thom's musical interests diverge, and
in April 2001, Akimbo is drummerless for the second time.
However, with 25 of the best original songs on the planet,
John and Attila refuse to let Akimbo die. An all points bulletin
is announced, and a search party is organized to seek out
drummer #3. After auditioning five different drummers, Heath
Bowers comes onboard in July, and Akimbo, soon to be the ripe
age of three years, lives on...
