Face it, let's call them what they are: disc jockeys. People who spend hours upon hours programming their voices, sequencing them appropriately, making the recordings, and handling the post-production only get the recognition such: "Dude, did you catch the new Amon Tobin release on vinyl? I'm using in my next mix session, fer sure." I have very little respect for someone who can manipulate two record players with a cross-mixer in between when there are people knowledgeable [sp?] to make their own voices, sequence their own music, and do it in a complete manner original to their spirit of creativity. |
tonehog
Not to cause a riot in the previous statement. I simply think that those who can perform with "real hardware" deserve more respect than someone who can mix two DAT players (symbolically) playing music. Additionally, I don't think that scratching is an art, as it is easily emulated via software if ABSOLUTELY NEEDED (I have never wanted to, nor needed to emulate such noise, and I do industrial drum-n-bass from time-to-time). |

1) The sheer number of hot girls in Athens' meat-market bars with an IQ of 60 who think live music is "icky" 2) people who don't promote their band then complain about it. 3) folks who only listen to one type of music, eat one type of food, and drink one type of beer. 4) students who think the union is a townie bar 5) students who would pay $8 to see a tribute band but refuse to pay $2 for original music. 6) the lack of winning lotto tickets 7) the fact that the union doesn't take credit or debit cards... even for lunch. 8) BW'3 awesomely evil buffalitos and their affect on my waistline 9) that old guy who rips down band posters 10) OU server security. |

The nepotism in the local music scene. If you know the right people, it doesn't matter how bad your band sucks, you'll have a crowd every single time you play, and if you don't know the right people, it doesn't matter how good you are. Talent doesn't matter, because, if it did, 61 Valiant would've been a HUGE local band when they were still around, and plenty of bands that have had a ton of shows wouldn't have had them. I won't lie, this nepotism has helped my band (some). Our being friends with Pencil is what helped us play that show with the Ataris. But it still sucks. |

You guys should really give the DJ thing a rest. You obviously haven't spent any time actually watching/listening to a good DJ or you're just totally ignorant......maybe both.... |
loveandsqualor1
Well, I think they should give the DJ thing a rest because it's so old it's not even shocking anymore and the DJs that post on here are nice guys. But I think the root comes from DJ'd dance parties contributing to the death of live music. If you're a DJ, and you enjoy it and are good at it, why should you stop so someone else can do what they enjoy while you can't? You shouldn't. The anger needs to be directed at the partygoers who claim to support independent music, but would rather tramp it up listening to a David Bowie song they already know than hear a local band play. If you never go see a live local band, but you're at every Dance Or Die, stop acting like you're part of a scene and just admit you're a clubber. I could go on, but, Like I said, it's tired. |
susieblack
it's just that you guys consider yourselves peers...and i have been to a couple dance or dies just to really try to understand, but it's just fuckin stupid....how can you not just see yourself as a person who plays other people's music? you're not a musician, you don't play an instrument. |
jmligt
I'm not a DJ. I guess I "DJ" on the radio every now and again, but I think in this context we are talking about live DJ's. I've never touched a turntable outside of my living room or radio studio, but I've been playing music in some form for a long time now and play with a band or two around this little berg. Good DJ's are musicians, period. It takes a lot of skill and a good ear to DJ well.....Susie, I don't think you understand what a DJ does... |

ok Number 1: There are 2 different types of DJ's. One is a guy who plays other peoples music for people to dance to and then picks another song to play. The other is someone who actually mixes changes and remakes an existing song into something "new", using other songs, new beats and other things. Top things wrong with Athens: 1) Believing that it's a big time college town, when in fact it's just another south-eastern hillbilly town. 2) People who walk out into oncomming traffic with their Ipod in their ears then look at you like it's your fault you almost hit them because they wern't paying attention. 3) I'm not the Mayor. 4) The complete lack of a Stoner Metal scene. 5) Pool tables with no hand chalk. |

1) All the venues that prosper year after year from local bands and don't or won't pay them a guarantee. 2) Community music events for profit. Bands play for free, people pay their cover, it goes to the charity. Liquor sales go to the venue. |

what exactly is wrong with #2? as long as the money goes to charity and the bands understand that they're not getting paid, what's the problem?......the venue profitting on liquor sales?...they're providing the venue, they should get some compensation... |

number one, who the fuck are you? number two, it's punk band, who cares if we're good? three, i play in punk bands, normally very drunk, so of course my musical talent isn't portrayed, i don't get off on people thinking i'm a great musician. some things are stanger than fishin. four, guns and roses are awesome. axl is a tool, but appetite for destruction is one of the best albums ever, considering where they came from and the scene they arrived from. five, i don't need your approval, and almost all my posts are tongue in cheek. if you ever grew enough balls to talk to me, or say something like that to my face, you would realize i'm pretty weird, and there are some things very wrong with me, but i try to be pretty cool to anyone, and i do check out cerain musical endevours and such before i talk shit on them. i'm not just some fuckin idiot who goes to show here and there and talks shit on what i don't know. what have you done for this scene that gives you so much merit as to criticize me and my band? at least i'm doing something. i only get on this thing for kicks, something to do since insomnia has seemed to take over lately. my foggy mind has done good enough stringing something together so far, so fuck you good sir. |
susieblack
okay, i see you've taken some photos, and claim to be in some bands or whatever...still, fuck you. so i was wrong about you not doing anything but talking shit...but you still seem to want to pick on the little guy, i'm fuckin 18, man, i don't have the wonderful wisdom and intuition you seem to have over me. if i joined a more rock and roll or metal band, played sober, and showed off every bit of talent i have, would you respect me more? i do have a rock and roll band in the works, and in which i will actually play something with some complexity to it. you should show up, and decided it sucks too, since you're such a famous and accredited musician. perhaps you can give me lessons. |

"if i joined a more rock and roll or metal band, played sober, and showed off every bit of talent i have, would you respect me more?" No, on all fronts. You don't have to be in a metal band or a rock & roll band to gain respect from me. Not that my respect matters to anyone except me. I'm a music snob, if I don't like the music you play I'll let you know. But on the non music side of it, when you trash music just becuase you don't like it makes you look like an idiot. At least have enough respect to realize that this is something that they work hard at what they do, and respect the fact that they are good at what they do. You claim Dj's suck and arn't shit. Go see a Lab Rats show & tell me their Dj sucks. Sure, you might not like it but you have to see how badass he is. "i do have a rock and roll band in the works, and in which i will actually play something with some complexity to it. you should show up, and decided it sucks too, since you're such a famous and accredited musician." Once again, complexity doesn't mean shit. Slipknot has 30 members and they all play different things which can get pretty complex. THat doesn't mean that they are good. For that matter Dave Matthews Band are all increadible musicians and talented as hell, their songs are complex and have changes everywhere and they all show off their talent in every song. That doesn't make it good music. Just having the best ingrediants ever doesn't make it perfect. "perhaps you can give me lessons." Just one. Chill out, you say your comments are in jest, well maybe mine are too. |

#24 - WalMart - Sure, they'r cheap, but since they came, there's a lot less choice around town, and fewer decent jobs too. #42 - OU - They take our tax money and then compete with local businesses on an uneven playing field. That's bogus. That's illegal. #52 - No Thai food, and a Japanese joint that closes for the fucking summer?!? And when they ARE open, they close at the most freaking retarded times. Assholes. #74 - Smoking in bars - It's just so much better to go out in smoke-free cities. Many smokers in said cities are thankful for anti-smoking legislation. Who the fuck wants to be a slave to some fat old white guy laughing at your sorry stinky ass? $63 - The AMN star rating system. - I know that if I posted 200 BBS messages with "asdf asdf asdf" as the content, that I'd get more credit that submitting four stories and ten on-topic BBS posts. >:( |

5. For some reason they still think that personal hygiene leads to global warming. 4. They honestly believe that someone from the Athens music scene is going to "make it". 3. 2 bands with Athens roots did "make it" The Snapdragons and O.A.R. Not big fans of the later, but hey, they used to play here all the time. You'll find more Atheletes and frat boys in this town that stink worse than the hippies. Which reminds me? Are there hippies in Athens? Most of em are gone dude. There are a few crunchy types, but as far as full blown tie-dye wearing, birkenstock wearing, non-showering folks. All but a few of them flew the coop. Athens is a liberal town though. There is no denying that. Someone has to balance out the fanatical right wing. :-P Ooops, I just critisized the government. I guess that makes me a troop-hating baby-eater. |

Stars are an average of your contributions over time. It prevents folks from doing some good for the AMN and then resting on their laurells. You get a few points for mbbs posts you get a LOT of points for stories, photo albums you get a few points for selling stuff on the AMN You get a LOT of points for blog posts. I haven't written any code to "reward" folks with stars manually. It's all computed by the server on the fly. Stars are awarded by the AMN itself. Even I could lose stars if I didn't add new stories all the time. |

and it's a shame that the easiest way for me to get them is to post a shit-ton of worthless BBS comments. The system is broken. You can post a lot of profanity-filled BBS garbage every week and I'll be a valued 5-star member. Lame. You can post a bunch of stories that add value to the AMN for a while, and your "reward" is fleeting. That's retarded. You're rewarding the wrong thing. People don't put any value in the AMN star system because it's fucked up. If you reward true value to the AMN, people might do the sort of thing you're always trying to get them to do, e.g. submit content to you. If you stopped rewarding quantity of posts (vs. quality, or some other metric,) visitors might also value the BBS more. Etc. Etc. Perhaps we should start a thread for this so you can get some feedback? I don't think it's a trivial matter. i.e. you should really define what the AMN values and find a way to indicate as much. I know that the people I consider some of the backbones of the AMN don't have good ratings. Lame. Keep me at negative five stars, just fix the system. You and almost everybody else will be pleased when you do. |
