Seriously. What the fuck. Talk some shit or form bands....something. I'm going to stop checking this nonsense.

Tom Waits is playing in Columbus June 28th. I'm exicted and will desperately try to get tickets when they go on sale.

I've been listening to the Germs anthology (MIA) alot lately. I like how it covers their evolution from two chord noise and stilted drumming to what resembles a really tight, fast band on the later songs.

Athens needs new student punk bands. Is it a folk scene now? AHHHHHH! Fill me in people I'm outta the loop.

When it comes to punk/rock music around here anymore the scene is so stale. The decent rock acts have been playing around here way too fucking long without any good new shit to push their asses. No offense, but I really have no desire to see Dirty Johnny or We March or Red Dahlia another fucking time in the same venue playing pretty much the same songs. It doesn't even seem like most of the rock bands around here even care much about the shows they are playing. Sure they usually show up but nothing new. I look more forward to the opening bands whom are hopefully from out of town. I mean shit they barely even flyer their shows anymore. I asked Johnny why they hadn't barely flyered their show last week at the skull and he really had no answer. I don't believe it's about the money they are just bored and tired in my opinion. You are right in saying that the scene is a folk scene now. Folk or indie crying bullshit. Now some of these bands which I have seen are pretty good in their own right but none of that fuck you balls to the walls attitude that I need. I like bands like Wheels on Fire and Russenorsk but they definitely aren't going to revive the Athens scene if their ever really was one. Not the rock scene I need anyway.

I have a hard time accepting that the makebelieves don't still kill live. But I'm admittedly biased as a founding member. I played in a diaper for that band. There are pictures.

I don't mean to disparage what is going on now, but I guess I remember a lot of activity on the basement/noise front the last couple of years I lived there. I want to see more Fleshworld and whatever Andrew L. is doing at the moment. I would have loved to have seen the Sword Heaven house show that happened in Athens. Paper Machetes should play in Columbus. Are they still together? Recording?

OU college kids should stop making derivative Bright Eyes crap (I'm not talking about Southeast Engine....Adam writes much much better songs than fucking Bright Eyes)and return to the freak roots.

I'm just trying to start some sort of conversation. Please let me know about the good stuff happening. House shows, freak outs, cook-outs, 4-track demos. I want to visit this summer when I'm not playing a show and hang out when there is something happening independent of the bar scene.

I'm going to keep posting on here everyday and actually talking about music. Since this is music message board I thought that might be appropriate.

The below website has some really cool free lo-fi punk, and rare Acid Rock mix tapes. I've been geekin'out pretty hard to some of the songs on the Acid Archives mix.

Talk to me people.

Message boards are definently laaaaaame. But you know what is much lamer(sic)? A message board that no one uses.

What happended to that homophobic fat kid? Are the rest of you too busy with your important jobs selling fast food and textbooks to talk about music?

This will continue everyday until Matt decides to delete the thread. I have no shame.

on a more serious note though, yeah, i can sympathize with the stagnation comment. i'll say up front, i've only been around for what, 5 years is it now? which i know isn't shit compared to some of yous fucks, but there does seem to be a general lack of new blood that wants to rock. not gonna say there's nothing, because that just isn't true (octoberfist, anyone?), and i catch the makebelieves, we march, and the rest of the local veterans whenever i can, but frankly, i don't give two shits about jimmy mcsweatervest's latest acoustic indie alterna-bullshit (no offense, jimmy. but don't worry, there's still plenty of people that think you're deep). fuck, like i was saying to pencil a couple weeks ago, i'd love to get something new put together and play and actually fucking contribute, been trying off and on for the past 2 or 3 years, but so far that's been an effort in futility.

blah blah, enough bitching, i'm just bitter i can't drink tonight on account of the meds. back to new bomb turks. and yeah, MIA kicks ass. especially annihilation man

The Hellacopters have just released their final album called Head Off. It's a bit different because all of the songs are covers. One of the covers they do is Veronica Lake off At Rope's End by the Turks. A lot of other great covers also. You can hear most of it on their myspace. I'm not sure whether it has been released in the State's yet or not. They toured and did splits with the Turks in the past. I last saw the Turks with Radio Birdman in Cleveland about a year ago and they were still great. I think my fav is Destroy Oh Boy but they are all great. I think my favorite show was in Columbus at the Al Rosa with Zeke. I had never heard Zeke before at the time. Shit they were fast. Anyway here's the track list for The Hellacopters album with some descriptions. I copied it off their myspace.

ELECTROCUTE originally performed by "Demons"

A great punk rock band from Stockholm that's been around forever. Our version of the song differs quite a bit from theirs. Mainly because we put a slight Status Quo touch to it. Off the single by the same name. It's also available on the "Demonology" compilation on Gearhead Records. They have a new album coming out soon.

MIDNIGHT ANGELS originally performed by The Peepshows

From rebro, Sweden, this band put out some rocking albums on Burning Heart Records before calling it quits some time ago. This song is off their last full length "Refuge For Degenerates", which is also their best. When I first heard it I was blown away it felt as if I forgot to write the song myself. (Nicke)

www.myspace.com/thepeepshows

(I'M) WATCHING YOU originally performed by The Humpers

Punk rock band from Los Angeles who started off as Suicide Kings but changed the name to The Humpers in the early '90s. (I'm) Watching You is taken from the album "Journey To The Centre Of Your Wallet" on Sympathy For The Record Industry (1994). This tune was on all of our mix tapes around '95/'96 and served as a big inspiration for writing (Gotta Get Some Action) Now!
www.myspace.com/theofficialhumpers

NO SALVATION originally performed by The Turpentines

The Turpentines were our labelmates back when we were on White Jazz Records. No Salvation was released as a single off their record "American Music For American People" (1998). They also released the album "By Popular Demand" before disbanding in 1993. The Turpentines were something else! When these guys were good (which was most of the time), they were really freaking good.

IN THE SIGN OF THE OCTOPUS originally performed by The Robots

Together with bands like The Turpentines, Kids Are Sick and "Demons", The Robots were one of Stockholms' younger bands kicking around as The Hellacopters got started. All these bands did shows together & provided a sense of inspiration & healthy competition in those early days. The song is to be found on their excellent 2004 album "The Robots Are Everywhere" (Idle Hands Records).
www.therobots.1go.dk

VERONICA LAKE originally performed by New Bomb Turks

Awesome band from Columbus, Ohio. Their debut LP "Destroy-Oh-Boy!" from '92, is probably the biggest source of inspiration for getting The Hellacopters started. Veronica Lake can be found on their "At Rope's End" album, released by Epitaph in 1998.
www.myspace.com/theenewbombturks

ANOTHER TURN originally performed by The Maharajas

Another great band from rebro, Sweden, The Maharajas was formed by ex-members of The Strollers & The Maggots. Another Turn is taken from their album "Unrelated Statements" (Low Impact Records 2004).
www.myspace.com/themaharajas

I JUST DON'T KNOW ABOUT GIRLS originally performed by Asteroid B-612

I guess we always felt some kind of connection to a lot of Australian bands. It seemed like we shared a similar approach to rock 'n' roll. It was real inspiring to know that bands on the other side of the world were doing pretty much the same thing as we did. Asteroid B-612 was a great band and we had the opportunity to play with them a few times. Johnny Casino have a solo thing going on now check that out too.
www.myspace.com/asteroidb612rocknroll

RESCUE originally performed by Dead Moon

I should hope that these iconoclastic road rats out of Oregon need no further introduction. They were around for ages, touring, recording & setting an example to others before the split-up in '06. They were one of the most important bands in contemporary music. You can find Rescue on the album "Destination X" or their best of compilation "Echoes Of The Past". Founding members Fred & Toody have a new band called Pierced Arrows and drummer Andrew also has a new band, The Shiny Things.

THROTTLE BOTTOM originally performed by Gaza Strippers

Gaza Strippers were a kick ass Chicago band formed by Rick Sims who used to front The Didjits. This song is off their Man's Ruin debut "Laced Candy". They were truly unique live. There's rumours going around that Rick has a new band called San Francisco Sperm Trolley.

MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME originally performed by The BellRays

The BellRays are really a one of a kind type band. At times they almost sound as if Millie Jackson was fronting Black Flag. This song is off their 2003 album "The Red, White & Black" and it's one of their more classic Southern Soul sounding songs. If they play anywhere near you, you really ought to go see 'em. They recently put out a new album.

www.myspace.com/thebellrays

DARLING DARLING originally performed by The Royal Cream

The core of The Royal Cream is The Sewergrooves' Kurt & Mattias Värmby (of F.O.F. & Dom Där & Hux Flux fame). The tune has been released in two versions, as a 7" single (2000) and as a different album version on "Death Is Not A Destination It's A State Of Mind" (Big Bongo Records 2005). I've stood in on bass on occasion with these guys and consider them to be one of the top acts around town. (Kenny)

www.myspace.com/theroyalcream

STRAIGHT UNTIL MORNING originally performed by Powder Monkeys

From Melbourne, Australia comes one of the hardest rocking outfits ever. Straight Until Morning was released on a five track EP in 1995 and was also on their album "Time Wounds All Heels" (Dog Meat) from the same year. A very hard song to do justice to, but at least we tried.

www.myspace.com/74118129

ACID REIGN originally performed by The Yes-Men

Another great Australian band. We intended to include our version of this song on the album but we just couldn't match the intensity of the original, so it ended up as a flipside for the single release of In The Sign Of The Octopus.

"I last saw the Turks with Radio Birdman in Cleveland about a year ago and they were still great."

Yeah I saw the Sept. 2006 reunion set at the Carbar in Columbus. I half expected them to be drunk in keeping with most reunion shows you hear about. Nope. They played the rock n' roll music real nice. I had only seen them once before at the Union when I was in High school. I remember Geraldine being much better that night, however. They played last June in Columbus, but I haven't heard of them doing anything again lately.

(MIA); I'm really fond of No God right now. I also have a strange affection for American Leather. The bass in Communist Eyes is also really catchy.

I actually just wrote an incredibly long and passionate post that I accidentally deleted when I tried to put a cool picture next to it. I too spent to muster up that kind of moxie again so I'll just sumate what it said.

There was an amazing music scene in athens, and we weren't the only ones who thought so.

It's a shame that people think things are really that bad, but are they really that bad, or did the heyday mentioned above just jade everyone to the point that they don't get excited anymore?

I'm inclined to agree with Chris that I can't imagine the makebelives putting on a bad show, or the Dragline Bros, the Dropdead sons, the snails, etc. (i'm not trying to exclude anyone, just save space. I typed out all the names in the last post).

If you want to experience a terrible music scene, I invite you to visit youngstown. You really oughta hear some of the crap they're trying to shill to me around here. Oh, here's a good one. Love Story in Blood Red had to play at a place the size of Tony's because none of the booking folks at the bigger venues thought they were special enough. Don't think I haven't offered to help either. I keep getting the same dumb look, like I'm the idiot for suggesting that things could ever be different and better.

That being said, does anyone know of anybody hiring in akron or cleveland that might be interested in some guy that used to bartend at the union, "you know, that one guy, what was his name...stevie, or something. I can't remember. who cares. Anyway, that bald guy."? I'm sitting at home on a computer on a saturday night, for christ sake.

As far as what I've been listening to: Nothing happy, I can tell you that much. I just listened to mishka's new songs. Willie nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Old timey pop music (Misty, jerome kern, stuff like that). Random unlabeled mix cd's that probably belonged to you, Chris, when we lived together, but got mixed in with my stuff. Just what you'd expect me to be listening to when I'm unemployed and have computer access, really. Also, a lot of stuff from bands from athens. Right now, i'd give anything to see we march or the makebelives for a hundreth time.

Hi John,

Love Story in Blood in Red came through Columbus like two weeks ago, but I didn't find out about the show until like an hour before they probably played.

I was thinking about you last fall when Brian Jonestown played in town. They weren't bad, but I only stuck around long enough to catch Ranton scream at his back up band for stepping on his solo and bitch about how excited he was to be playing a pub in Ohio.

at this very moment it's ten years gone, but for some reason a series of rainy days sometimes puts me in the mood for zeppelin.

Anyway, I think that brian and I were lucky to have caught anton on a good day. Also El Jesus de Magico played at that show, and John oddly remembered me from blackoutfest. He and Barry had a lot to do with the introductions and the apologies from managment about being douchebags over the fact that neither b nor myself had id's. I meant i.d.s, we had id's and ego's to go around. At any rate, it's nice to know that someone still thinks of me every once in a while.
