Saturday night was the big ACMF...some impressions, and ramblings about that night...
Didn't get going until 9PM, sue me, I can't go to bars that early, for the rest of the evening.
----------
9:00 PM Casa Cantina, The Arch Villains
-This was my first chance to see the arch villains, and I wasn't disappointed. A lot of the older Cantina patron, were talking about it being too loud and not being what they're into, but that's to be expected. What I witnessed was a really entertaining trio of Two basses and drums, but the basses were running through a gauntlet of effects that made me on more than one occasion, ask myself how the hell you can get that sound out of a bass. I had a big smile plastered on my face, just enjoying what is essentially straight ahead rock, but bastardized and rearranged so not even it's mother would recognize it.
I just got the DNA results back from the lab, that's how I know.
Cacophonous, yes, melodic, yes as well, still haven't figured out how they pulled that off.
---------
10PM General Stacks, The Union
My first gander at the Stacks as well, and was not disappointed. A couple of early technical miscues, didn't affect the show one iota. These ladies can sing, and harmonize...it's dreamy I tells you. Not to mention that they covered some velvet morning by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, which I really didn't think anyone I hadn't made a mix for had ever heard. I felt warm and fuzzy, knowing I wasn't alone. And this song is no slouch to pull off, alternating between 4/4 and a 3/4 waltz tempo thing. I'm sad that Emily (keys and vox)is leaving, but upon talking to Shanea (sorry about the spelling) I was told Jody Toledo is either joining or temping for Emily. But either way the General will continue to take orders, and that's a good thing...because let's face it people. we are at war.
----------
11PM The Wingnuts, Blue Gator
Not everything can be new and exiting, sometimes the old and comfortable, can make you move. Sure I knew what to expect here, sometimes that's a great thing. The Wingnuts are a great band, who just keep on doing what they do best. Making divorcee's dance.
They are Athens' Musical MILF masters.
-------------
12 Midnight, Loaded Revulvas, O'Hooley's
Ahh a special show with fill-in drummer, Christina Corbin. I've seen the Revulas many times, and this was nearly as good a show as any they've put on. Perhaps slightly more racuous, but that's hard to tell since they really don't give a shit, nor do they take any. Personally I thought they could have been louder...most of the heavier rock bands seemed to be dialed back...perhaps this was not to scare the uninitiated...perhaps an accident. Regardless, it was a good show, by a band, that has gotten noticable tighter with each outing....and that's not a pun.
-----------
1 AM, was going to be We March at The Union
But somethign strange happened between O'Hooley's and The Union, Someone handed me a cigarette that looked kind of funny. I toke a couple of puffs off of it and it made me dizzy and disoriented. The next thing I know I missed all of the one o'clock shows and was running down the middle of the street being chansed by two headlight like Eddie Grant in the Electric Avenue video.
OK, that's all crap, but bars being what they are, by the end of the evening I got distracted and missed the last act(s)...TS.
The thing that I was really impressed with was that EVERY venue I went to was PACKED. I haven't seen or heard how it turned out financially, but I think it should be a success.
You'd think those visiting nurses would want to stick around.
