Let's get heavyPosted On: March 22, 2004, 2:06 pm- [ permalink ]
Ya know, there's a lot of problems facing this country right now that, quite frankly, are getting old. Deficit, death penalty, prayer in schools, teaching evolution in schools blah blah fucking blah. Now, what I don't understand is why the hell the Federal Government has anything to do with a lot of it. The federal deficit is a no brainer, but I can't comprehend how we've gotten so far away from the original concept of the Constitution in some areas.
Let's take abortion for example. (wait for groans) See, I don't care how wise or worldy they are, there is no way in hell 12 people sitting on a bench should be allowed to dictate to a nation of 256 million that something as personally upsetting as abortion is either legal or illegal. Seriously, do you think that someone in New York City has the same motivations and value system as some living in Birmingham, Alabama? Most likely not. So why should they be subject to rules regulated by a federal institution on a matter that is one of moral value? The debate over abortion will never be "over". There will always be those for and against it. Personally, I'm not against nor for it. As far as I'm concerned, there are women out there that get em that absolutley should get them. A lot of married couples today have no right having kids, much less 20 year old party girls on meth. At the same time though, I don't think that followers of Islam, Christ, or those of the Jewish community that detest abortion as part of their faith should have to pay for it. It just ain't right. But then there's always that "except in the case of" category that's oh so fun. The gray area of politics that produces more high stepping and backpeddling than anywhere else. "What if the mothers life is in danger?" "What if the fetus is a result of rape or incest?" Well, if ya ask me (and by reading this blog you have), as long as the woman in question makes up her mind before the third trimester...then fine, so be it. But who pays for it? The State does. Not the Fed, the state. Here's what I'm getting at: Every year there are elections and issues that are voted on in every state in the US. We vote every year on something. Why not let the states handle this issue? And not the government of the state, but the people of the state. This is a Democracy no? So every two or three years (and the length of time will be determined by some million dollar research project out of Cornell I'm sure) the abortion act will come up and each individual state will be able to set its own moral agenda...as the Founding Fathers intended. Of course they would have all spit on the idea of abortion, but then of course over half of them would have fought for the south in the Civil War as well. Times change, folks. There would of course have to be some unilateral guidelines set up that everyone would follow and would have to be agreed to by all of the states, for instance: Third Trimester and partial birth abortions Even if abortion loses the vote, are "Special Circumstance" abortions still allowed? What is the consenting age for someone to have an abortion without parental notification? And there are a lot more...hell, of the three that I've listed two of them might just become responsibilites of each state, so you might see three or four issues pertaining to abortion during each election period: Issue 1 Allow abortion Issue 2 Allow Special Circumstance abortion Issue 3 Change age of consent to 14 And so on. And you could do the same with the death penalty and other issues that need to be regualted, but are issues of morality. Morality changes with every street you walk on, much less every state, so in instances of legislature that dictates morality, the people of the state should be allowed to do what we haven't been able to do in the last 20 years. Make a decision. All we've been doing for the past two decades is voting for some idiot and hoping for the best. We have the system set up to allow us to vote on these subjects, so why not use it and save the federal Government time and money. The less they have to dick with, the more they can do...or so you'd think. I'm sure they'd fuck it up somehow. And one last thing about teaching evolution in schools. I can see the hubub about teaching evolution in humans in school...but what's the problem with teaching evolution in something like a frog, or birds, or some kind of animal that we can actually trace back to its roots? Science shouldn't be punished because of politics. The problem with the whole Scopes Monkey mentality is that neither side can prove they're right. Evolutionists are dead wrong until they produce a single version of the missing link and Creationists are wrong until god comes down from the mountian to pass out textbooks. And the Creationists have a huge problem...as this country gets more diverse...what version of Creationism becomes prominent. Imagine a Creationist that finally pulls of a coup and gets it into schools...only to find that the kids will be taught from the Koran. Wouldn't that be a hoot? Until next time... Pardon while I indulge myself (yeah, like the very existense of this blog isn't self indulgence overload.) So I ran into Toledo the other day (Yes, he knows the face of Death) and he tells me that he's gonna put up a "user Comments" section on the blogs.
My first thought was something like, "YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAARGHHHHHHH!" Mind you, the reason why I post all this bullshit is because it helps me sort out my thoughts. Also it will probably piss off some hippies as its on a message board located in hippie/commie central. So the idea of having someone post a user comment on one of my carefully crafted, drunken rants wasn't exactly thrilling to yours truly. I mean, what unqualified, overstated jackass wants some other unqualified, overinflated ego having douchebag horning in on his gig? But at the same time, there's a small part of me that would welcome it. Maybe its my sick sense of me against the world that wouldn't mind seeing some of the dickbags that used to roll accross the Athens Message Bored attemtp to slay me in a post. Or it could be that I'm just out of material. Scratch that, I'm not out of material, I'm out of motivation. It should be noted that of the 1206 hits on this blog, at least 400 of them are mine. Yeah, I love to see myself type. Enjoy. |
