CD Review: "Life in a
Bubble" by We MarchBy Matthew Toledo - 10/15/2002
There are a lot of punk bands in Athens. This town seems to breed them like rabbits. We have quantity. That said, I don't think a single purely local punk band has put together a full length CD that was of quality enough to play on the radio since the breakup of Planet of Pants. That is, until now.

We March's disk, entitled "Life in a Bubble" is a well recorded barrage of fast, loud, aggressive, wall-of-angst tunes that feature a passionate and evidently very pissed Zach Fuller on lead vocals. The full length CD is angry enough to make you want to kick your dog in the face on your way down the hall to punch your mom in the stomach, but it is also melodic enough to keep you from wanting to scratch your eardrums out before the 2nd track is done playing.

The band stated in a September 19th 2002 interview by Sarah Laubacher for the Post that members of We March have been performing at Athens' home of angst, the Union, since the age of 14. It is like the band took all that time hanging out in the Union, condensed all the smoke, puke and energy, and placed on plastic for your home enjoyment. Guitarist Curtis Frey's frickin-huge guitar sound could shake the tar out of your lungs before he shakes the tubes from his amp.

Although the band has gone through some drummers over the course of recording their CD, they evidently had no problem finding kit-masters capable of bashing out lightning fast drum riffs to finish the project.
The title "Life in a Bubble" could not be more accurate. With all their members having basically grown up listening to "Union" bands, We March's début CD has an unmistakeable resemblance, intentional or not, to releases by bands like the Spiveys, The Means and the afore mentioned Planet of Pants.
However, their sound is not soley the result of inbreeding within the scene. We March's use of ultra heavy retro influenced guitar riffs could easily fit into a songs by Detroit rockers, MC5, or the Stooges. "Life in a Bubble" is a Energetic, Snide, Intense, Menacing, Nihilistic, Angst-Ridden snapshot of Athens' underground rock scene.
There are a lot of realy good songs on this CD. Childish and cliched as this may sound, "Life in a Bubble" rocks and rocks hard. I personally have a 3 song limit before I buy a disk, meaning, there has to be at least 3 songs I like on a CD before I shell out 15 bucks. "Life in a Bubble" easily meets my quota. Gems include "Electrode for Her Pleasure", "Barnstorm", "Hey Jules", "We March" and my personal fav "I Hate My Job." Buy it for your CD collection. Warning: Not for pussies. I'm still waiting for the pussy police to take my copy back.
